About Will Scott, Ph.D.

I build AI platforms and the teams that ship them, and I've stayed close to the engineering even as my teams have grown. Lately that has meant generative and agentic AI platforms at IBM, where I own the architecture and set the direction. I move easily between the engineering weeds and the executive room, but what has always driven me is building things that make a real difference in people's lives.

Of the many memories that I have from my graduate school experience, one that has stayed with me throughout my professional career is a professor telling me, “Yes, your solution is correct…but it is not an elegant solution.” At the time, as a sleep-deprived doctoral candidate, I did not immediately understand the significance of his words (to say the least). In fact, it would take years for me to truly appreciate this level of succinct candor, and how much it ultimately helped shape my approach to technology, and leadership.

In the years that have passed since completing my degree, I’ve always made it my mission to strive for elegant solutions that are user-centered, that address user pain points, are forward-thinking, and that solve problems in ways that are novel. In many instances, the difference between a solution, and an elegant one is attention to detail, work ethic, and a drive to win – traits that I have cultivated and nurtured through lived experiences, both professional and personal.

I also understand the importance of effective communication – I speak both tech and exec. An elegant solution is meaningless without the ability to communicate the value proposition, or to align stakeholders around a vision. I have worked in different roles that have allowed me to grow my communication skills in several ways, and along this journey, I’ve learned that effective communication is at the core of any successful leader and business.

At the end of the day, I just love delivering outcomes that will make an impact in people's lives, and I bring a broad cross-domain skillset to bear in order to do so. Whether leading a team that delivers cutting-edge A.I. technologies, or leading the delivery of enterprise solutions at scale, I continue to have fun tackling difficult problems.
